Activities Carried out

HEALTH PROGRAMMES

COTFONE-UGANDA ,through the regular outreach activities/programmes, sensitized/trained communities on hygiene and sanitation programmes which involved community members training on making of sanitary components in their household like drying racks,tippy-taps,composit pits, bash shelters among others. This led to control of diseases like diarrhea for improved family savings as a result of reduced medical costs.

HIV/AIDS being cropped from near by boarders of COTFONE-UGANDA’S areas of operation (Rakai) COTFONE-UGANDA sensitized communities through grass root community groups like youths, women etc, the preventive measures of HIV/AIDS and its awareness which has attributed to increased community awareness and HIV/AIDS prevention together with support to HIV/AIDS victims by integrating them in the community development activities i.e. Income generating activities for their self reliance and equipping them with skills and knowledge of making kitchen gardens to improve their nutrition and live hood.

Family planning as a strategy for sustainable development, COTFONE-UGANDA, trained, sensitized community members I.e. COTFONE CHILDREN’S CENTRE’S guardians who are met once in every 3 months and trained on family planning methods and their impacts for their sustained family support.

Since a health mind lives in a health body, COTFONE-UGANDA spearheaded the campaign of preventing and controlling malaria disease in COTFONE’S area of operation however, this was fulfilled by working jointly with community members where 2 people were trained from each village in first aid malaria treatment as malaria drug distributors who provides free malaria drugs to community children under 5 years. However, prevention is always better than cure, an initiative the community drug group adhered to by training their entire community members the preventive measures of malaria disease which later improved children’s health status and school attendance for better education,.

EDUCATION

COTFONE-UGANDA as a leading community based Charitable NGO ,provides free basic formal education and vocational skills to Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVCs) 3-10 years .rehabilitated at COTFONE CHILDREN’S CENTRE . and has led to promotion of children’s right for education. More still, older OVCs have been sponsored to secondary and vocational in situations like Nakasoga SS etc to attain formal basic education and vocational skills for students/children’s future self-reliance under COTFONE sponsorship scheme.

Still on education component, COTFONE-UGANDA provides primary education in English, Mathematics,writing/creative drawing and foreign languages i.e. Japanese language . in order to give OVCs a solid foundation to succeed in their future endeavors.

COTFONE vocational programs prides itself on teaching the children practical skills and creativity through hands –on lessons in necklace making etc. this activity encourages children to think outside of the box, and provides them with possible future income generating activities.
The teachers are all volunteers and their services are limited.

TECHINICAL SUPOORT TO COMMUNITY GRASSROOT GROUPS.

COTFONE-UGANDA, believes that, transforming underprivileged communities a holistic approach should be adhered to. Therefore, COTFONE-UGANDA using its national and international professionals technically support community groups for their sustainability top empower their entire communities

Community groups are empowered in the following fields;
(a) Income generating activities
(b) Village savings and loan associations
(c) Business skills i.e. Management, planning (Budgeting) among others.

Groups such as TWEZIMBE GROUP has been empowered in the field of Village savings and Loan Associations, Income Generating activities like Poultry etc and business skills (Management, Planning/Bugeting) etc w which has attributed to the acquisition of knowledge /skills like Product Value Addition for increased incomes hence savings in there association and finally are able to support OVCs and HIV/AIDS victims.
COTFONE-UGANDA has capitalized on the idea that in order to improve the live hood of HIV /AIDS affected children; we must target heads of house holds to provide children with life basic necessities.

Kiwangala youth development association has been supported by COTFONE-UGANDA to disseminate HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness sexual reproductive health, Family planning, Sanitation and Hygiene programs. All these programs are conducted through staging free music and drama shows to communities for effective sensitization of community members.

This youths group provided skills to communities on how to make sanitary components like drying racks, composit poits,tippt-taps,bath shelters etc. however, the same skills are instilled to students/pupils in various educational institutions like COTFONE CHILDREN’S CENTRE, ST Paul Kyanukuzi ss,King’s college SS etc. This brought about improved health in schools.
COTFONE’S Approach

COTFONE believes that in order to help orphans and other vulnerable children reach their full potential, a holistic approach must be taken to address their needs. However, success thus far is attributed to the fact that membership is embedded within the very community it serves, making it easy to understand real problems in our community and in formulating practical solutions.
